About
Tony is A24's biographical drama about the formative summer that shaped one of the most influential food personalities of the 21st century. Set in 1976, the film follows a young Anthony Bourdain during his final summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts before enrolling in culinary school -- a transformative period when the future chef, author, and television host was working as a dishwasher and line cook at Cape Cod restaurants including the now-closed Flagship Restaurant and the still-open Lobster Pot. Dominic Sessa, the breakout star of Alexander Payne's The Holdovers, takes on the lead role, bringing the same naturalistic energy that earned him widespread recognition. Director Matt Johnson (BlackBerry) brings an indie filmmaker's eye to the coming-of-age story, working from a script by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels that explores how Bourdain began to understand that food was more than sustenance -- it was narrative, rebellion, and community. Antonio Banderas joins the cast in a key role, alongside Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, and Stavros Halkias. Filming commenced in May 2025 on Cape Cod, with scenes shot in Provincetown on MacMillan Pier, town beaches, and along Commercial Street, as well as in Hyannis and Plymouth. Production wrapped by August 2025. The film captures Provincetown's bohemian spirit during the American Bicentennial summer, a setting Bourdain himself wrote about lovingly in his memoir Kitchen Confidential as the place where he first felt the pull of kitchen life.
