About
Is God Is is an upcoming thriller directed by Aleshea Harris in her feature film debut, adapted from her own Obie Award-winning 2018 play of the same name. Produced by Amazon MGM's Orion Pictures, the film brings Harris's explosive theatrical vision to the screen, blending elements of revenge thriller, Southern Gothic, and Greek tragedy into something entirely its own. Kara Young and Mallori Johnson star as twin sisters bearing disfiguring burn scars, who are visited by their bedridden mother and given a devastating directive: find and kill their abusive father, the man responsible for their scars. Sterling K. Brown plays a key role, with Vivica A. Fox and Janelle Monae rounding out the cast. The story follows the sisters on a cross-country journey of vengeance that forces them to reckon with questions of justice, mercy, and inherited violence. Principal photography was scheduled to begin on September 10, 2024, in Louisiana and conclude by October 17. The Louisiana setting provides the swampy, sun-scorched Southern backdrop that mirrors the play's mythic quality, where dusty roads and decaying towns become the landscape for an almost biblical reckoning. Sterling K. Brown completed his work on the film by January 2025, indicating that filming wrapped on schedule. Harris's original play premiered at the Echo Theater Company in Los Angeles in 2018, winning the Obie Award for Playwriting and the Relentless Award founded by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film adaptation is scheduled for theatrical release on May 15, 2026.
