Criminal

Criminal is a crime drama series for Amazon Prime Video created by Ed Brubaker and Jordan Harper, adapted from Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips's acclaimed comic book series of the same name. The comics, originally published by Marvel's Icon imprint before moving to Image Comics, are celebrated for their noir storytelling across interconnected stories spanning multiple generations of criminal families in a fictional city. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) stars as Leo, known as 'Coward,' a master thief who avoids violence at all costs. Adria Arjona plays Greta, a sharp-tongued car thief and driver seeking one last score after her husband's imprisonment. Richard Jenkins portrays Ivan, a former robber now suffering from dementia. The ensemble includes John Hawkes, Kadeem Hardison as Gnarly (a former boxer), and Logan Browning as Jenny, an Internal Affairs detective. The first season adapts the comics' Coward story arc. Principal photography began on June 10, 2024, in Portland, Oregon, and wrapped in the fall of that year. Portland's atmospheric urban landscape, with its mix of gritty industrial areas and moody Pacific Northwest weather, provides an ideal stand-in for the comic's unnamed city, a place where rain-slicked streets and shadowy bars define the criminal underworld. Brubaker's direct involvement as co-showrunner marks a rare instance of a comics creator maintaining significant creative control over an adaptation of their own work. The Criminal comics have won multiple Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards, and the series represents one of the most anticipated comic book adaptations outside the superhero genre.
