About
Barbershop is a comedy series for Amazon Prime Video that revives the beloved film franchise for a new generation. Ordered in May 2025, the series is co-created by Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the original 2002 Barbershop film, alongside co-showrunner Max Searle. Kevin Hart executive produces through his HartBeat Productions, bringing another layer of comedy industry clout to the revival. Jermaine Fowler stars as Trav, the lead character inheriting the legacy of Calvin's barbershop. Fowler, who broke out in CBS's Superior Donuts and appeared in Coming 2 America, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Ricky Stanicky, brings both comedic talent and dramatic range to the role. The ensemble includes Roy Wood Jr., Punkie Johnson, and Brett Gray, building a new crew of barbers and regulars for the iconic South Side Chicago setting. Filming began on October 20, 2025, with production headquartered at Cinespace Studios in Chicago, the same city where the original film trilogy was set and shot. The return to Chicago roots the series in the authentic community atmosphere that made the franchise resonate, with the barbershop serving as a gathering place where neighborhood characters debate, gossip, and connect. The original Barbershop (2002) starring Ice Cube grossed over $77 million domestically and spawned two sequels and a spin-off, establishing itself as a culturally significant comedy franchise. While Ice Cube is not part of the new series, the show's connection to original co-writer Todd ensures continuity of the franchise's voice and spirit.
