About
The Corps -- which was later retitled Boots before its premiere -- is an eight-episode Netflix dramedy based on Greg Cope White's 2016 memoir The Pink Marine. Set in the 1990s when being gay in the military was still illegal under Don't Ask Don't Tell, the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer of 13 Reasons Why) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh) as they join a diverse group of recruits for 13 weeks of Marine Corps boot camp. Vera Farmiga plays Cameron's narcissistic mother Barbara, a chameleon always on the run from the consequences of her actions. The series was created by Andy Parker (Tales of the City) with Jennifer Cecil as co-showrunner, and was the final television project executive-produced by the legendary Norman Lear before his death. Filming took place in the New Orleans area from May 28 to late August 2024. The production team transformed a defunct naval base in the region into the Marine Corps training facility on Parris Island, South Carolina, where much of the action is set. Initial filming had begun in March 2023 but was interrupted by the writers' and actors' strikes, resuming in spring 2024. Boots premiered on Netflix on October 9, 2025, receiving positive reviews from critics but also conservative backlash. Netflix canceled the series after one season on December 12, 2025.
