About
High School Quiz Show: Austin is a regional adaptation of the Emmy award-winning academic competition series that originated at GBH (formerly WGBH) in Boston. Produced by Austin PBS (KLRU-TV) and premiering in 2026, the show brings together Central Texas high school students in a fast-paced quiz format testing knowledge across math, history, science, literature, civics, and current events. The original High School Quiz Show, now in its 16th season at GBH, features teams of four students competing in a single-elimination bracket with four rounds: toss-up, head-to-head, category, and lightning. The Austin edition adapts this proven format for Central Texas, with schools including the Liberal Arts and Science Academy and Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders among participants. The national series is hosted by Joe Hanson, creator of PBS Digital Studios' Be Smart, which has amassed over 5 million subscribers. Austin PBS announced the show at its third annual Made in Austin event in April 2025 as part of its 2025-2026 programming slate. A pilot was completed in early 2026. The series will air on KLRU-TV and stream on AustinPBS.org and the Austin PBS app, alongside other new local productions including Austin Insight (weekly news), City of Songs (music series with Stephanie Hunt), and How Are We Today? (mental health sitcom from former Rooster Teeth colleagues).
