Miami Vice

Miami Vice is a period reboot of the iconic 1984-1990 NBC television series, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1) and set in 1985 Miami. Austin Butler is in talks to star as detective James "Sonny" Crockett alongside Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. The screenplay by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, inspired specifically by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark series created by Anthony Yerkovich that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. Dylan Clark and Kosinski produce for Universal Pictures. Kosinski has described the project as a passion piece, saying if it ends up being Butler and Jordan, he would be very lucky. The film will be shot for IMAX, following Kosinski's visual approach from Top Gun: Maverick and F1, emphasizing practical action and immersive cinematography. Production is expected to begin in 2026, likely utilizing Miami and surrounding South Florida locations to capture the authentic neon-lit, Art Deco-lined setting that made the original series a visual landmark. Universal has set an August 6, 2027 theatrical release date. The original Miami Vice, created by Michael Mann and starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, revolutionized television with its cinematic visual style, pop music integration, and fashion influence. Mann directed a 2006 feature film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
