Kathy Bates stars as Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a brilliant attorney who comes out of retirement with a secret agenda, in this reimagining of the classic legal drama. Though set in New York City, the show films at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles after Bates personally negotiated to keep production local -- a significant move for the LA film industry during a period of production flight. The pilot was shot in Toronto, but Bates leveraged CBS's desire to cast her into ensuring the series would film at home in LA. Season 2 premiered October 2025, and CBS renewed the show for Season 3 in January 2026, confirming it for the 2026-27 season. The show has become one of CBS's top-rated new dramas, with Bates bringing gravitas and wit to a character hiding in plain sight as a folksy Southern lawyer.
