About
After Foster Care is an independent documentary filming in Atlanta that captures the raw reality of what happens when young adults age out of the foster care system. The film follows individuals as they navigate the abrupt transition to independence -- finding housing, securing employment, and building support networks without the family safety net most young adults rely on. Production is based in various locations across Atlanta from October 2025 through February 2026, with filming sourced through the Georgia Film Office. The documentary addresses a critical gap in the child welfare system: each year between 20,000 and 35,000 young Americans reach the end of their allotted time in foster care and are thrust out on their own, often at age 18 with limited resources and no permanent family connections. The film joins a growing body of foster care documentaries including PBS SoCal's "Congratulations, You're On Your Own: Life After Foster Care" and the Foster Care Film & Community Engagement Project's "TOGETHER" series. However, After Foster Care distinguishes itself through its Atlanta setting, offering a Southern perspective on the aging-out crisis in a state where Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services oversees one of the largest foster care populations in the Southeast. The documentary aims to put human faces on the statistics and advocate for extended support services beyond the traditional age-out threshold.
