About
Twinless is a psychological black comedy written and directed by James Sweeney, starring Dylan O'Brien in dual roles as twin brothers Dennis and Rocky. The film opens with the MAX light rail rumbling through Portland before revealing an empty Chinese restaurant -- a recurring location that functions like the Chinese spot in Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho, a place where characters lay bare their pain. Dennis, a young gay man living in Portland, meets Rocky at a diner and the two hit it off, only for tragedy to strike. The supporting cast includes Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, Tasha Smith, Chris Perfetti, Francois Arnaud, Susan Park, and Cree Cicchino. Principal photography took place across Portland, Oregon, with Southeast neighborhoods serving as the residential backdrop and downtown streets providing urban texture. The diner scenes were intentionally scheduled as one of the final days of filming, because Sweeney believed the process of making the film would inform how they felt going into those pivotal moments. O'Brien had one stipulation before agreeing to play twins: the characters needed to feel like completely different people. Sweeney, whose 2019 debut Straight Up was made for just $250,000, worked with a larger budget on Twinless. The film world-premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2025, where it won the Audience Award. Sweeney also won Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival. Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions released the film on September 5, 2025, and it later moved to Hulu for streaming.
