About
North of North is a groundbreaking Canadian comedy that became the most-watched new series on CBC Gem upon its January 7, 2025 premiere, earning a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and breaking into Netflix's global top 10 in 33 countries with nearly 9 million views between April and June 2025. The series follows Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman in the fictional Arctic community of Ice Cove on Prince of Wales Island in Nunavut, who tries to reinvent herself after a spontaneous and extremely public exit from her marriage. Created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril -- both Inuit women living in the Arctic -- the series was filmed entirely in Iqaluit, Nunavut beginning March 14, 2024. With no established production infrastructure in the region, the Iqaluit Curling Club was converted into a makeshift sound stage housing interior sets. The creators' company Red Marrow Media is working to build a permanent studio facility, though it was not ready for Season 1. Filming wrapped in June 2024 despite the extraordinary logistical challenges of shooting in the Arctic, which the creators compared to "planning to shoot on the moon." The show's success earned a Season 2 renewal on April 29, 2025, co-commissioned by CBC, APTN, and Netflix, with production underway in early 2026. North of North represents a milestone for Indigenous storytelling in Canadian television, centering Inuit characters, language, and humor in a mainstream comedy format.
