About
Honey Don't! is the second entry in Ethan Coen and wife Tricia Cooke's self-described "lesbian B-movie trilogy," following 2024's Drive-Away Dolls. Margaret Qualley stars as Honey O'Donahue, a small-town private investigator in Bakersfield, California who gets drawn into a web of bizarre deaths connected to a secretive church after her friend Mia Novotny is found dead in a wrecked car in Antelope Canyon. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans, and Charlie Day round out the ensemble in this neo-noir black comedy that leans into pulp genre trappings with Coen's trademark dark humor. Principal photography took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico from March 25 to May 23, 2024, with the production employing over 600 New Mexicans -- 150 crew members, 15 principal actors, and 450 background talent. While the story is set in Bakersfield, Albuquerque's desert landscapes and diverse architectural backdrops stood in for various Southern California locations throughout the film. The film premiered at the Midnight Screenings section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 24, 2025, before its August 22 theatrical release from Focus Features. Reviews were mixed but noted the film's gleeful embrace of B-movie aesthetics and Qualley's committed performance as the wisecracking PI. For Albuquerque location-spotters, Honey Don't! adds to the city's growing resume as a premier filming destination, bolstered by New Mexico's generous production incentives.
